OK, I dont remember having to ftp anything unless I wasn't doing an advanced update. There are multiple core files that have been changed, so Im assuming that this archive I am to download is a copy of what I already have installed with the updated files with it? Just seems counter-productive. If the updater knows what files aren't being replaced, why not just add the new files through the update??
