If a selection box is grey'd out, that means you no longer have edit permissions to the message containing the attachment. If you hover over the selection box, it will tell you why. It probably says "This topic is locked, you cannot delete the attachment.". That's a little misleading because it is also used for PMs. For a PM, this means the message has already been read by the recipient, which means the message can no longer be edited. So in short, locked topics and read PMs (in the Sent box) cannot have their attachments deleted.
